Who is the ZEP for?

This position is intended for students, postgraduates or those with previous experience in the sector to gain well rounded practical experience and so therefore little or no previous experience is needed for our placements.
If you’re interested in any of the following things then Zoox can help you:

  • Marine Conservation

  • Marine Biology and Ecology

  • Marine Monitoring Methods

  • The Marine / Sustainable Tourism Sector

  • Intergovernmental Departments

  • Transboundary Environmental Problems

  • Scuba Diving and the Environment

While this opportunity will see the successful candidate working in the Philippines, Zoox plans to expand the Zoox Experience Programme to other countries soon. The selected individual must be confident enough not to be under constant supervision while working with local and national governments and you must be an experienced (minimum 50 dives) and qualified SCUBA diver. We have the ability to provide diver training in the UK and in the Philippines if you require further qualifications or experience.

How do I apply?

Simply send us an e-mail with your CV attached and we will get back to you as soon as possible on an individual basis. No bog standard replies from us, we assure you! If one of the placements above specifically interests you, do let us know, but we will be placing people depending on their skills base and what future career opportunities they are interested in.

How much will the ZEP cost me?

The cost of the ZEP is only a training charge and this will be used to support the Regional Coordination of Green Fins in the Philippines. We are proud to say that 100% of your money goes into the project. Costs including flights, accommodation, visa and insurance will have to be covered by the individual but don’t panic as we will help you to keep your costs as low as possible. You can read more about living costs here based on an estimate of 8 weeks.

How can I get a Visa and how much will it cost?

As you are volunteering and not working you will only need to apply for a Tourist visa which you can get on arrival or in advance. There is more information on Visa costs here but we highly recommend that you carry out your own independent research before going abroad anywhere. Staying more than 59 days? Then you will need to know about the ACR-I card!

Where are the previous volunteers now?

This is something we get asked a lot and so we have put together the Zoox Alumni page for you to find out what they gained out of it and where they are now.

What happens to the projects when the Volunteers leave?

All of our projects are done in conjunction with local partners and governments departments to ensure sustainability of the projects. We never supply trained volunteers to any project that would depend on them or any other volunteers. You can find out more on the projects from the individual blogs written by the volunteers.

How much will I spend during the ZEP?

Below are high end approximate costs that have been averaged over the 8 weeks. This takes into account hotels in Manila as well as your accommodation on location (eg. Puerto Galera =£95 per person per month based on 3 sharing) and a realistic average of all your food, water and alcoholic drinks and other luxuries that you may spend money on. This is the top end amount and can be seriously reduced if you don't eat out and cook at home which we help by sourcing self catering accommodation prior to your arrival.

 Accommodation
£28 per week

 Transport £10 per week

 Food, Water, Drinks, others
£60 per week

 Visa £6  per week

ZEP Training and Coordination for 8 weeks
£1500 for 2 months

 Total ZEP cost
£2332  (£1500 +£104 x 8 weeks)

Testimonials

 "Informative, Friendly, Useful and Guiding."

“I’ve learned more in the past 8 weeks than I did over the whole 3 years of my degree."

"I really liked the multi elements to Zoox, you can carry out research, get involved with local communities and educate people. Not many positions offer such scope, usually you have to narrow yourself into a specific area."

"You can be told about something numerous times but until you actually experience it for yourself you will never 100% understand it."

"I did not realise everything I had achieved until looking at my log!"

Q: Would you recommend the ZEP to a friend?    A: "Yes, most definitely, it has been much more useful than many other volunteer programmes."

“The ZEP gave me exactly what I wanted…and more.”

"I gained skills and experience far beyond what I expected when I first signed up, and I feel like it has opened many doors for me in the future."

“I spent hours on Google looking for something like this.”
